And the other one is Rocco.
So since we are putting them in the same room - and that room is small - we have purchased bunk beds.
Let the mocking begin.
But look people, sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do. So bunk beds it is. And this is where my problem is. Do I put Rocco in the bottom bunk with her? Or do I keep him in a pack and play for a while? A crib is out of the question since there is absolutely no room for it. So I can prop open a pack and play each night, if need be. Or do I just bite the bullet and place them together on the lower bunk (with some safety railing, of course) and let the chips fall where they may? No pun intended there...though I do feel certain one of them will fall out every 22 minutes.
And if I do put them in there together, then what's the trick? Do I sedate one or both of them each evening?
How do I solve this problem? And don't think The AG hasn't been a world of help. He has. He tells me at least once a day, "Bunk beds? What were we thinking? This is gonna be a disaster and you're gonna have to sit in there with them every night. Not me. I didn't come up with this idea, you did. And when Rocco throws himself onto the floor I am not helping drive to the Emergency Room at 2 in the morning."
He is such a doll.
So please, my lovelies, hear my predicament. One room. Little space. Two kiddos. We can't be the only family in the world who has faced this problem. So tell me, what would you do if you were me? I could really use a little help from my friends.
P.S. Please do not leave me a comment that says something like, "get a bigger house." I tried that one already. And don't leave me, "You're nuts - it will never work." I've heard that one a million times from the man I love. Thank you.

I'd do the pack and play. I just can't see two kids getting any sleep in the same bed, one crawling over the other. It's hard enough getting two to sleep in the same ROOM.
Before the year is up, I bet the kids adjust just fine (and they'll both be older), and one will sleep in each of the bunkbeds.
Oh Melissa, I've been wondering when you were moving. Our move was completed in puddles of tears, and I TOTALLY see how the need-closure-on-every-blessed-thing works. I was there. Easier after the move, when familiar things aren't right there in front of you, begging to be mourned.
What's a 'pack & play?' - the thing we call a 'portacot'? If so, I'd go with that.
Sure beats the one other option. Which is the sleeping together, fighting & playing, mucking around and not sleeping, waking each other up all thru the night, waking each other up 15 mins earlier EACH morning, falling out of bed, sleeping instead in Mom & Dad's bed, turning that into a habit, and growing up never ever being able to sleep in own bed option.
I can easily see US falling into that option. Don't do it to yourself.
Pack and Play, sister.
Oh yeah, the pack n play for sure. And sedation.
Just leave one of them with me!
Candice...you're no help. :)
Mel - Sis had to put bunk beds in her little boys room and it never fails that they end up on the bottom bunk together, even though that wasn't the plan. The kiddos will figure it out for you, most likely. My suggestion..try both and see which one works better...what's the harm in that?
Is it too late to switch to a trundle bed? They are great!
My vote is.... pack and play. If you put them in the same bed and it works it would be a miracle but then in a year when you move again you have the problem of getting them used to sleeping alone. That's a whole nother blog. :)
PACK AND PLAY, ALL THE WAY!!
When we are on vacations and are all sleeping in the same hotel room, I put the baby in a pnp and drape blankets around it so he can't see out and the twins won't wake him up. Works GREAT!
What about a trundle if they won't calm down together? You could just use a crib mattress and slide it under the bed or lean against the wall during the day.
I would DEFINITELY do the Pack & play!
What about a trundle bed? No room? Just a thought. We just put bunk beds in the girls room and they are 5 and 4. I'd be worried about the climbing.
Yeah, the pack and play sounds like a more gooder idea.
Forget the bunk beds, have you ever tried to change sheets on a top bunk bed? I would put the mattress's on the floor and let them sleep on the floor.
How about just putting them on the floor? Wait, I mean the mattress on the floor and then both kids could sleep on that. It was what we did as kids.
I have absolutely no parenting experience so I can't give great advice, but I can agree with the consensus...Pack and Play.
Ok. If I were you I would put him in MY bed...BUT that's because ALL my kids sleep with us! Arent you glad youre not me? Now..if I were YOU I would put him in a pack n' play. I can pretty darn much guaranty that even if you DO end up putting them both in the bottom bunk, you WILL end up changing your mind. Neither one of them will get much sleep!
Is there space for them to share a full size mattress on the floor even? My 8yr old twin girls have always shared a room and they have shared a full size bed since they were 5 with no problems. And when we travel we usually sleep them, along with their 5 yr old brother all in one queen bed. You can even turn it so they are sleeping the long way...it gives them more room to roll without disturbing the other.
Good wishes with your move and all the transitions!
Im thinking maybe a bed with a trundel{not sure on spelling}. You know the kind of bed that just slides out from the other. It will save space and be low to the floor....you know...just in case. Good luck with the move~
Solution:
Send her to me. In Alaska.
I have two boys that want a little sister so badly....not sure what they want to do with a little sister, but I think it's all good.
My boys are nine and five. When we moved here they had the option of having their own rooms, but chose to be in the same room on bunk beds. Well since then they have migrated together onto the bottom bunk, where they both sleep together every night.
So, not only do we have an unused top bunk, but we also have a completely empty extra bedroom, with a bed.
So, send her here.
You can still have visitations.
okay, my real suggestion is skip the pack n play, go straight for co-sleeping. It'll work.
Personally, my kids are NUTS for sleeping on the carpet in sleeping bags. I think they would happily do that for a whole year.
Would your crib mattress stow under Remi's bottom bunk during the day and make a nice little bed on the floor for Rocco at night? Try a few different things - something will work!
I have a boy 7 and a girl almost 5, who have slept together in a queen-size loft bed since they were 2 and 5.
It's perfect because their bedroom is really small and the loft bed is about four feet off the ground, leaving them with plenty of SPACE for tub/drawers of toys and extra play space under the bed. Right now it's sort of a club house.
And as far as SAFETY goes, I put it up next to the wall and put a bedrail on the other side. The younger one sleeps by the wall.
Then I put a padded, upholstered cedar chest at the foot of the bed, so they can just climb down onto it, then down to the floor. We're going on 3 years and it's worked out perfect!
Just don't know what we'll do when they're too old to sleep together. Which is coming up on us. Yikes!
I vote for the pack & play for now, till Rocco gets a little bigger.
Good luck with the move!
